NEC, Casio, and Hitachi forming mobile joint venture next year

It took a little longer than anyone had tmnet streamyx broadband but that rumored three-way deal involving NEC, Casio, and Hitachi in Japan to create a superpower mobile joint venture is now official. Two of the three -- Casio and Hitachi -- have already had their mobile units united in holy matrimony since 2004, so NEC is the new kid on the block joining in the fun to help spread out R&D costs a bit further, achieve even more spectacular scales of economy on component orders, and pull sophomoric pranks on Fujitsu to score popularity points with the cool companies. The deal's expected to close in April of next year, at which point the combined venture will be the second-largest in Japan behind Sharp and the idea of NEC bringing devices to the States won't seem that far-fetched -- Casio Hitachi already does through Verizon, after all.

Sprint & Verizon have dominated the Mobile Internet field since about 2004. They have gone back and forth several times in regards to who has the best coverage, pricing, broadband cards and so on. But, that said, they are fairly similar. They both cost $59.99 a month. They both use the same exact technology with the same top speeds. They both have a 2 year contract in order to network configuration the Broadband Card for a decent price.

Recently, a new competitor has emerged that does offer something different. Some for the better, some for the worse.

Let's look at the advantages of Cricket Broadband first:

1) No Contract - Month to Month service

2) No credit checks and no deposits

3) Only $40 a month for Unlimited service vs. $60 a month for Sprint or Verizon

4) Faster Rev A service in most areas - up to 3.1 Mbps downloads

Now for the downsides:

1) Coverage! Cricket is limited to only select cities in the USA. If you are a frequent traveler outside your home city, you will want Sprint or Verizon since they have MUCH more coverage throughout the USA. But, if you just want something that works in your city, and Cricket has coverage there, it is a great choice.

2) Customer Service. Cricket can be hard to get technical support from. Look for a Cricket Dealer that specializes in Mobile Internet so that you can get your questions answered.

Bottom Line:

I would not recommend Cricket for frequent travelers, or use in an RV as the coverage is just not there. However, if you are lucky enough to live in a city where Cricket offers service, then Cricket is a great alternative to Cable or DSL Web Package For about the same monthly cost you get to use your Internet all over town...not just in one fixed location. So for many, using Cricket for your Home service (you can use a special Mobile Router to share 1 Cricket account with the whole family at the same time), and a Sprint or Verizon card while traveling is the way to go for ultimate savings and mobility! Additionally, a benefit for either service is you don't have to buy a $6 coffee to get WiFi tmnet streamyx email at a cafe!
